HOLBY CITY TITLE SEQUENCE // HEART OF HOLBY
The inspiration of The Holby City title sequence derived from the notion ‘An X-ray of Holby City’. The idea was rooted in being inside an X-Ray and travelling through the human body into a 3D space. Light reflections and kaleidoscope style transitions with the glassy surface of the bones where designed to create an abstract representation of the skeleton. I wanted to totally totally immerse the viewers in another world, which doesn’t necessarily feel medical.
Using rich textures which play with transparency and pattern, the bones themselves were used as windows to project perfectly vignetted Holby footage. Within these frames we chose intimate and poignant moments to reflect onto the bones, from the intense and dramatic to the uplifting and magical. Conceptually we wanted the heart to represent the human nature of Holby City- not only is it about the hospital but more importantly the people. The heart is present not only to illustrate the warmth and sentimental nature of the programme but as a metaphor for the longevity of the shows life.
The concept was not to literally scan a body but to scan through Holby and take a closer look at important snippets which define life at the hospital. The scenes used were chosen to feel close and personal, they are not generic hospital footage but things which represent what Holby is all about.
